Eclectic and diverse, the 2022 Artisan Trail will take visitors on a journey through different disciplines and locations across the two weekends of Desert Festival.
The Artisan Trail is a self-guided tour of artist and craftsperson’s studios. It’s an opportunity for the community to visit some of the many creative people in Alice Springs, ask questions, learn about their work, what inspires them and visit the spaces where the magic happens.
Ideal for those that don’t want to miss out but have a busy agenda, the Artisan Trail is a great opportunity to explore what the creative community of Alice Spring is working on.

I arrived in Alice in 2002 and since then have worked alongside my partner biologist, Dr. Charlie Carter, enabling visitors to connect creatively to the environment of Central Australia. My art practice is informed by this intimate experience of the bush, and arises largely from this juncture of art and science. I have an investigative approach, employing a variety of media to express and explore my connection to the land. My work is created en plein air and in my studio, which provides a generous space to bring it all together, I like to call it The Department of Alchemy. Come and see why!

Metal Art
I work with predominantly recycled metal such as off cuts, automotive parts and silverware to create sculptures of birds and wildlife through blacksmith techniques, welding and plasma cutting. I also make “art” furniture and gates from recycled frames and materials. I have been practising this art form for several years and have a studio workshop at my home.

Maryanne Malbunka & Stephanie Radke Painting
Maryanne Malbunka and Stephanie Radke developed their collaborative artworks in 1989, when they lived at Ipolera, in the Ltalatuma lands west of Hermannsburg. Maryanne paints different totems of bushfood and animals, and the story of Tnorula (Gosse Bluff) through her symbols. Stephanie depicts different forms of communication such as hieroglyphics and the runic alphabet. The Ipolera Leaders (H. and M. Malbunka) were always supportive of their artworks. Currently Maryanne lives in Ntaria (Hermannsburg). Stephanie lived in Ntaria during her childhood and now lives in Alice Springs. Maryanne and Stephanie’s collaborative works have been represented in various national, state, and local art awards, many by invitation only. The piece ‘Ipolera’ was acquired at the Alice Prize by the Alice Springs Art Foundation, and a solo exhibition took place at the Araluen Arts Centre. Communication through Symbols is the main theme of the works, combining the Western Arrernte methods of telling stories and history with disused communication systems from around the globe.

I think of my work as unfinished inventories of everyday life. Improvisational worlds which combine noise, quick strokes and accidental colour combinations, used to question fears and ambitions. I love moving between digital and analogue techniques in order to explore and identify the project’s nature. Each element in the composition becomes a conversation between me and the materials. What often starts in one direction will change as the layers build and affect each other. Nothing is solid, static or whole. Like memories the forms shift, fragment, intertwine and evolve

We are based in Alice Springs, that town right in the middle of the vast continent of Australia. We think this place is pretty unique, it’s wilderness, languages, people, cultures and seasons. Elbow Workshop products are our collaborative musings, inspired by this place and it’s stories, built to last and informed by our designer / maker family fusion. Elbow Workshop revolves around our 650kg hand made concrete and steel table from which we and a variety of guests work. Directly out the front windows sits Paint and Panel (think 90’s airbrush art) in front of a registered sacred site; a perfect dichotomy of the industrial, cultural and natural landscapes of Mparntwe.

I am Genevieve, I have lived in Mparntwe for the past 13 years & am constantly inspired by this magical land around me. I have been drawing and painting since I can remember, but the past year or so I’ve dived deeper into refining and finding my own unique style. I find it hard to describe my artistic style but I find when I’m painting and drawing I have a clear empty mind and my hands just draw; then meaning comes after. My medium is generally of the heavier high quality fine Art paper stock leaving my mark with a mixture of draftsman style pens, acrylic paints & Indian ink. I am also currently on the path of becoming a tattoo artist which has been a life long dream & I will have just moved into the Stay True Tattoo studio in Alice Springs CBD by the beginning of October and excited to present my art for the first time since recently living 400 kilometres away in an indigenous community for the last 6 months, where all I have done is work and Paint. I’m really looking forward to re-emerge myself back into the local community with a fresh energy; ready to create and share as a full-time artist.

Inspired by the Northern Territory, living between Darwin and Alice Springs, the outdoor lifestyle plays a huge part in my practice. Bushwalking, bike riding, exploring the landscape and talking to Territorians keeps me busy. My sketchbooks, studies and overall life balance gives me the confidence to paint with conviction and excitement. I love films, music and community events that make the community go round.
